The Library's ability to meet the information needs of students, faculty and other users depends on maintaining a strong collection of books, journals, electronic information resources and computer equipment.

The average price of health science journals is increasing annually at double-digit rates. Electronic resources are essential to library users, but they are expensive and complex to manage.

Despite substantial Health Science Center administrative support, the cost of maintaining a quality collection has outpaced available state funds for many years.

To reduce this gap, the Library must rely on the generosity of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends to provide critical resources and help sustain excellent services and access to health science information.

Gifts of books and other library materials
The Library accepts gifts and donations of books, journals, and other materials based on their value to the collections. However, due to limited staff and space for print journals, the Library can no longer accept donations of print journals without prior authorization. Please contact the Electronic Resources and Serials Librarian, Ms. Sherry White, (817-735-2467) before sending these materials.

In order to make the most effective use of resources, the library reserves the right to determine the disposition of donated materials. The Library will provide a letter acknowledging the receipt of the gift. Please contact Mr. Tim Mason, Technical Services Librarian, at (817) 735-2466, if you would like information about donating material to the Library.

Memorial donations

Donors may honor the memory of someone through a gift to fund the purchase of a book or journal subscription. A bookplate will be placed in the book noting the person memorialized and the donor.

Deed of gift

When a material gift of significant value, $250.00 or more, is given to the Library, the donor is asked to sign a Deed of Gift legally transfering both physical and intellectual ownership of the material to UNTHSC. With this Deed the University has literary rights to unpublished manuscripts as well.

Tax deductions and appraisals

The donor should seek professional advice about the tax deductibility of gifts to the Library. The Library cannot provide an appraisal for a gift it receives. Most reputable dealers in rare or antiquarian books can provide appraisals.

Arrangements and transportation

The Library can help a donor with the logistics of delivering materials to the Library. Gifts normally are hand-delivered by the donor.

Librarian review

The librarians use their best professional judgment to select donated materials that will benefit the students, faculty, and staff of the Health Science Center. Gifts of books that are duplicates, outdated, out-of-scope, or in poor condition will be put in the Library's annual sale.
