Public Health Information for Practitioners (PHIP)

Workshop Descriptions

The PHIP curriculum consisted of three classes, all taught in one day.  All classes were free of charge.

Participants attended their choice of one, two, or all three classes.  Continuing Education credits were available for physicians, nurses, and social workers.

Session 1: Public Health Information Resources on the Internet

Participants learned how to search National Library of Medicine (NLM) research tools, including PubMed, the NLM Gateway, Loansome Doc, and others.  Finding and downloading population data sets, staying informed, accessing online resources in public health, and basic information about Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) was also be covered.

Session 2:  Community Health Resources

National Library of Medicine resources aimed at community health planning, health education, consumer health, and patient education were emphasized in this workshop.  Public health information on PDAs and Tablet PCs was also covered.

Session 3: Bioterrorism, Emergency, and First Response Resources

Attendees learned the effective use of National Library of Medicine toxicology resources and first responder databases.  Field resources for substance identification and patient treatment on PDAs was also covered.
