The Special Collections of the Gibson D. Lewis Health Science Library are devoted to preserving the heritage of osteopathic medicine. Special Collections houses rare, valuable, and fragile materials. They are available upon request for use in the Library.
The Special Collections are in two major categories, Historical Books and Archives & Manuscripts. Follow the links below for detailed descriptions of their contents.
Faculty members, students, and visitors are invited to utilize the unique resources of Special Collections for their study and research. Although these materials do not circulate, they may be used within the Special Collections area. Photocopies or digital copies of materials can be provided upon request.
The Special Collections are located on Level 3 of the Library, Room 304.
Access to the Special Collections is by appointment. Appointments are scheduled between 9:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. on weekdays, excluding university holidays and other campus closings. For scheduling, please contact Kathy Broyles at 817-735-2070 or Kathy.Broyles@unthsc.edu
The expansion of Special Collections began in 1982 under the direction of C. Ray Stokes, curator. Through a generous grant from the Mabee Petroleum Corporation and donations by numerous individuals, Special Collections has grown steadily through the years.
How You Can Help
Special Collections relies almost entirely upon grants and gift funds for the purchase of materials. Please notify the library before discarding materials of historical interest. These include personal or professional papers, ephemera, memorabilia, manuscripts or publications, laboratory notebooks, organizational and institutional records relating to UNTHSC or the osteopathic profession.
