Special Collections

Special Collections in the Gibson D. Lewis Health Science Library is devoted to preserving the heritage of osteopathic medicine.  Located on the third floor of the Library, Special Collections houses rare, valuable, and fragile materials. They are available upon request for use in the Library.

The expansion of Special Collections began in 1982 under the direction of C. Ray Stokes, curator. Through a generous grant from the Mabee Petroleum Corporation and donations by numerous individuals, Special Collections has grown steadily through the years.

There are four main categories of material in the Collections: the Historical Book Collection, Archives and Manuscripts, the Oral History Collection, and Medical Memorabilia.

HISTORICAL BOOK COLLECTION

This collection contains rare and valuable books, as well as those fragile volumes requiring special treatment or protection to ensure their preservation. Containing over 2,700 volumes, the Historical Book Collection seeks to document the founding, growth and intellectual development of osteopathic medicine and to provide historical continuity to the research and instructional activities of UNTHSC. The collection is particularly strong in three areas:

  • Osteopathic Medicine

Central to the interests of the center, all works relating to osteopathic medicine and all works by osteopathic physicians are collected comprehensively. Included are the complete works of Andrew Taylor Still, the founder of osteopathic medicine, as well as writings of the early pioneers of the profession. Contemporary professional and popular works by D.O.s are extensively represented. The worldwide spread of osteopathic medicine is reflected in books from Great Britain, Australia, France, and Germany.

  • Orthopedic Manipulation, Bone Setting, Manual Medicine

The historical development of manipulation as a therapeutic procedure is illustrated in volumes from these and related disciplines. Works from Hippocrates to the present are represented, with emphasis on the 19th and 20th centuries. Included are books by leading figures such as J. Cyriax and J.B. Mennell on orthopedic manipulation; J.C. Tissot and D. Graham on massage; and W. Hood and H. Barker on bone setting.

  • 19th Century American Medicine

The rise and development of osteopathic medicine is placed in historical prespective through works illustrating the state of American medical knowledge and education in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These works, either in original or reprinted editions, include representative textbooks of the day as well as research monographs. The 19th century also saw rise to many other medical theories and therapies as alternatives to "regular" or "allopathic" medicine, such as chiropractic, herbalism, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, mental healing, and naturopathy.

ARCHIVES AND MANUSCRIPTS

The purpose of this collection is to collect, preserve, index and make available for use the following types of records documenting the growth and development of the campus.

  • Institutional Archives

The Archives were established to document the history of UNTHSC and the osteopathic profession in Texas through the collection and preservation of institutional records, reports, memoranda, correspondence, photographs, medical memorabilia, and the private and professional papers of UNTHSC faculty, departments and organizations, alumni, and others.

A copy of each student's thesis or dissertation is deposited in the Archives; another copy is in the circulating book collection.

  • William G. Sutherland Collection

This is an important collection of private papers, publications and memorabilia of William G. Sutherland, D.O., the founder of cranial osteopathy. The collection includes his recorded lectures, correspondence, study guides, photographs and official records of the Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation.

  • Texas Osteopathic Medical Association Archives

The library maintains the historical records and publications of the Texas Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, now known as TOMA for the years 1927-1989.

ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION

This collection preserves in recorded interviews perishable historical information found only in the memories of individuals who have either witnessed or participated in the development of UNTHSC and the osteopathic profession in Texas. Currently containing over 70 interviews, the collection includes the memoirs of the college's founders, administrators, faculty, and students, as well as leaders in osteopathic medicine in Texas. Oral histories in the Lewis Library.

Through the generosity of Dan Saylak, D.O., the TOMA Archives Committee digitized the entire collection, copying them on CDs and DVDs. This ensures their presevation and allows them to be shared electronically.

MEDICAL MEMORABILIA

Medical artifacts associated with significant people and events are available. They include 19th century patent medicines and an early family doctor's black bag with its contents. Medical equipment, instruments, and other physical itmes of historical interest are housed in Special Collections. These also include portraits, diplomas, award plaques, and many other artifacts.

The library has acquired a collection of 19th and 20th century microscopes, many in their orignal wooden containers.
